 AFL Rules

#1. Fantasy Football is supposed to be fun.

#2. Don’t forget Rule #1.

League Dimensions

The AFL is a league with 12 franchises with 12 different owners separated into 2 divisions. There is no particular reason why each franchise is in each division. Franchises return each year to the same division. However, owners can propose that franchises be swapped. This is not typically recommended because franchises have developed rivalries over the years in the respective divisions.

Schedule

Each team competes in 14 regular season games. 10 games (2 games each) against divisional rivals. The remaining 4 games are against opposing division.

Playoff Format

The 3 teams with the best record (percentage) in each division qualify for the playoffs. Round 1 #2 ranked team will play #3 ranked team, with the #1 seed having a bye week. Round 2 features the #1 seed playing the winner of Round 1. Round 3 features the winners of both divisions, the winner of round 3 is considered the AFL Campaign Champion.

In the event of a tie

The Pro-BowlA Pro Bowl game is held week 15 during Round 1 of the AFL Playoffs. The two #1 seeds, who have earned a bye week, are allowed to form a team using players from their respective divisions. At least one player from each team must be represented. The two Pro-Bowl teams will meet in a one-week showdown using traditional AFL rules. The winner earns $25 and bragging rights. (per league vote 2005)

TiesTies are permitted only in the regular season and are factored into the percent standings.(per league vote 2008)

DuesAnnual dues are requested by the annual AFL draft but not required until November 11th. After Nov. 11th, there is a $5 penalty that is put towards the trophy fund. Dues for 2008, 2009, & 2010 are $40 each season. Dues for 2011, 2012, & 2013 are $45 each season. (The pattern continues per league vote 2005)

The Second Season Players that AFL owners have on their roster by November 11th that qualified for the NFL playoffs are eligible for the AFL’s Second Season. Owners do not need to start players. Teams do not need to have a minimum or maximum number of players on their "roster". Teams may have different number of eligible players. Trades and transactions will affect the Second Season lineups. The team with the most points at the end of the NFL Super Bowl wins the Second Season and earns $50.

TradesTrades are allowed and always encouraged. However, stipulations have been set in place. Two or more owners may trade any players or draft picks that they have the rights to. Please keep in mind that no matter what a team’s roster must never exceed 23 players and always have 2 of every position. Trades must be forwarded to the commissioner and publicly announced before game time each week.

** Trade deadline for playoff eligibility is November 11th each year.

Standings

    1. Overall winning percentage
    2. Divisional winning percentage
    3. Most points scored
    4. Most points scored against

(there is no head-to-head rule)

Starting Line UpsLine-ups are to be announced publicly by 1pm kick-off or by personally contacting your opponent or the commissioner either by phone or email. If a team fails to do so, then that team’s preceding line-up from the week before will be utilized regardless of bye-weeks or injuries.

On weeks that have games on Thursday or Saturday, those players need to be announced before kick-off of their respective game or by personally contacting your opponent or the commissioner either by phone or email. Failure to do so makes them ineligible for that week.

Teams are ranked by a set order, as follows:
, in a playoff game a tie breaker is determined by the amount of points scored by the 2nd kicker on a team's roster. (If a team has 3 kickers then the kicker that has the most points of the three is considered the 2nd kicker.) If a tie still occurs then the kicker who was originally started who kicked the furthest fg wins. If a tie still occurs then teams use their 2nd kicker. If a tie still exists then it comes down to coin toss. The owner with the most tenure in the league calls it.
